Background:
There are three basic categories products fall into.
The first is the ones listed here from companies that give a cut off date.
This means that from the date stated they will not use any ingredients
that have been tested on animals. So obviously the older the cut off
date the better the company and product. There are some companies
in this category that we have not listed, the most well known is the
Body Shop who have a cut off date of 1990. This is because they are
owned by one of the largest animal tested cosmetic producers in the
world, L’Oreal. We feel it would be hypocritical on our part to
list them as all the profits made by the Body Shop will go to the
animal testers at L’Oreal.
The second category is the companies that have a rolling 5 year date like
Ecover. This to us is a con because the date moves ie the date they
will not use products tested after in 2006 is 2001, yet in 2007 this
moves to 2002 and so on. This allows these companies to say their
products are not tested on animals when in reality they are and their
policy is meaningless. We would advise you never to buy these products
and to stick to the products listed here.
The third category is companies who test their products on animals. Three
of the biggest animal testers are L’Oreal, Proctor & Gamble
(P&G) and Unilever (Lever Bros) these companies and others are to be
avoided at all costs as they kill, maim and mutilate thousands of animals
every single year.
The basic rule of thumb is if a product does not say
‘Not tested on Animals’ then it is.
Then the next step is if it says ‘Not tested on
Animals’ what is that companies policy? At this point it is
time to consult this guide. If there is any company you are not sure
about then please contact us for clarification.
